This book is all about Self. At its core, it is also against traditional marriage and the notions of sexual responsibility found in every major religion in the world, wisdom philosophies that are meant to help us through the many pitfalls of experience and the darkest aspects of human psychology. The unconstrained Self acting mainly in service of Itself makes of the world a dark place: look around you at all the evidence. This book, while beginning as an understanding and sympathetic view of the plight of many women who may feel frustrated, fatigued, stunted or otherwise dissatisfied with their lives, soon becomes a truly subversive tract against traditional marriage and traditional sexual mores; it promises women liberation from "evil" life-enervating societal structures of "male design." With just enough truth on which to base her specious conclusions, Shefali omits many important considerations and perspectives too numerous for this review. That said, a few points can be made. Many of the constraints and frustrations Shefali mentions are at root the terms of our existence, experienced by men as well as women, much deeper than historical inequalities which extend far beyond gender. Just how privileged, for example, were the men who died of black lung in the coal mines? There have been and always will be limitations and constraints for everyone, even for the most fortunate among us, the ultimate constraint being, of course, the necessity of death. This author imagines an enthroned sense of Self, ever blossoming and burgeoning upward, a Self centered on Itself that needs to remove all obstacles and even relationships that it "outgrows" as it readies for intergalactic travel. Ah, the Supreme Self, liberated at last from any encumbrances, anything that will break Its stride. There is no sense of self-sacrifice or responsibility to other selves in this book; it is truly a narcissistic vision with just enough "serpent whisper" to catch an exhausted woman off guard and convince her to sail for the limitless horizon and leave her children and equally exhausted husband behind. For the desperate out there seeking relief, look elsewhere rather than to the counsel of this book--look inward perhaps, upward perhaps. Take the children and beloved by the hand and make your solitary way. I have been a follower of Dr Shefali since her first book and the days when she was on Oprah. Her philosophy and eye-opening perspective on parenting has forever changed me as a parent. My kids are lucky I found Dr Shefali 😂! I truly enjoy parenting (even one with challenging behaviors) because I see the child through her conscious lens. Forever grateful.
